About Dr. Karn

Dr. Dharmendra Karn, MD, FEADV, FAAD; specializes in dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy. His special field of interest is dermatology, aesthetic dermatology and dermatosurgery. Dr. Karn began his dermatology career in 2004, where he was trained for his post graduate study at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India. Dr. Karn has received basic and advanced trainings in dermatology and dermatosurgery (Dermatosurgery skills, Hair Transplant, Skin rejuvenation, Cryosurgery, Laser surgery, Botulinum therapy – BOTOX, Chemical peeling, Microdermabrasion, Dermaroller, Phototherapy, Radiofrequency, Vitiligo Surgery, Nail Surgery, PRP therapy and OTHERS). He specializes in Laser surgery for skin rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, acne, acne scars, hair removal, tattoo removal, pigmentation – melasma / freckles, birthmarks and others.

Dr. Dharmendra is the professor of dermatology and advisor involved in making national guidelines for sexually transmitted diseases, leprosy and HIV / AIDS in Nepal. He regularly attends national and international dermatology workshops and congress. He has more than 25 national and international publications with numerous citations in the discipline. He has been rewarded globally with multiple awards including the “Presidential suprawal Janasewa shree award”.

Dr. Karn received his training in hair transplant from Prof. Dr. Alex Ginzburg, a pioneer in the field of hair transplant. Since then he has performed many successful hair transplants and is active in conducting workshops for Hair transplant in Nepal. He is the life member of many national and international dermatology societies.

Dermatology is one of the fastest growing branches of medicine in modern era. It deals with the disorders involving the skin, oral cavity and its appendages (including hair and nail). Leprosy and Sexually transmitted diseases are integral part of discipline. The field as a specialty is evolving only since the late twentieth century. Change has been so striking over the past decades such that illness have been replaced by wellness and patients replaced by clients. As per the census of MOHP – Nepal (Ministry of health and population) 2013/014, Skin diseases rank the 4th commonest cause of illness in Nepal. The diseases of skin or its appendages can have profound impact in the quality of ones’ life. The burden of skin diseases in Nepal is huge; however we have only handful number of specialists in the discipline.

Skin is considered the largest organ of human body. It forms an impermeable barrier against harmful exterior environment, mediates sensation, regulates temperature, produces vitamin D, prevents from ultraviolet radiation and is an important immune organ. Apart from these vital mechanisms, it is an important part in esthetics (Complexion, Wrinkles and Baldness); taking care of wellness rather than illness. The field of cosmetics and aesthesis is among the largest industries in the world. Also, the diseases, variations and peculiarities that we come across in the brown skin are entirely different from that of the West.
